Hold your left thumb and left index finger together gently with your right hand during the entire procedure below in order to get faster balancing of your nervous system.
Sit in a comfortable position. Relax. Roll your head a few times to relax the muscles in your neck. Breathe deeply – in through the nose, slowly; let it fill your lungs completely. Then breathe out through your mouth without forcing the air out. Repeat this for the next 4-5 minutes.
Then, imagine in your mind a peaceful place where you have been – maybe a vacation spot or a wonderful childhood memory. “Remember” that place with all of your senses. Feel the sand squishing through your toes as you walk, and the warm sun rays touching your body, and the breeze blowing through your hair. Smell the ocean air, and taste the salt water on your tongue. Marvel at the beauty of what God has made in this natural setting. Focus on this memory and hold it in your mind for about 4 minutes. It is best to go there in your mind with God or Jesus (and even have conversation with them). But do not imagine yourself with a family member or a friend (past or present) because you may start thinking of negative previous words or actions between the two of you and that may not be relaxing.
If you practice this relaxing memory four times a day (before all three mealtimes, whether you eat or not, and before bed), you will greatly reduce your emotional stress during the day and you will also be able to sleep better and longer at night. Practicing this technique on a regular basis, initially, will allow you to be able to recall it more easily so that you can utilize it anytime you find yourself in a stressful situation. All you need to do is to excuse yourself to the bathroom, if possible, lock yourself in the bathroom stall and go through the technique, then return to the situation in a better frame of mind.
